The Journal for the Aramaic Bible is moving closer to publication. The Chair of the Executive Editorial Committee, Johannes de Moor, has signed a three-year contract with Sheffield Academic Press for publication on behalf of the Editorial Board. There will be an official announcement of the journal at the IOTS meeting this summer, with the first issue appearing in January of 1999. Submissions are now invited. Please direct inquiries and papers to The Secretary, JAB, Dr. Willem F. Smelik, ThUK, P.O. Box 5021, 8260 GA Kampen, The Netherlands.

Scholarships include traveling expenses to and from Kampen, accommodation, facilities (desk, computer, library services) and a modest monthly salary. The maximum duration of the appointment is five months. In the case of PhD/DD students their supervisor(s) must include a letter of consent. Appointees are expected to work for the team two days a week; for the remainder of the week, they may devote themselves to their own research.

The Syriac Symposium III&emdash;The Aramaic Heritage of Syria will be held June 17-20, 1999 at the University of Notre Dame. Papers are invited on all aspects of Syriac Christianity, Syriac, and relationships with other cultural and religious groups. Paper titles with a 250-word abstract are due by October 1, 1998. SyrCOM-99: The Third International Forum on Syriac Computing will be held in conjunction with the Syriac Symposium III. Papers on all aspects of Syriac computing are desired. The Newsletter is working to add translations of targums to its web-site. S. Levey's translation of the Ruth Targum is now available, and Etheridge's translation of Pseudo-Jonathan is in the process of being added. If you know of any translation that is not subject to copyright restrictions, or if you have done one yourself you would be willing to share, please contact the Executive Editor.
